Researchers
say there’s no quick way to control and eliminate the invasive spiny water flea
from Lake George, so they’re recommending ways to try to keep it from
spreading to Lake Champlain.
The
invasive spiny water flea has found its way to Lake George. Researchers
say Lake George is the latest New York waterway contaminated with the creature, which
competes with fish for food.
Despite
an urgent plea by scientists who want the Champlain Canal shut off to
stop the spread of an invasive species, New York State says closing the
canal is not feasible.
For a tiny creature, the
spiny waterflea is generating a great deal of concern. The invasive species has been
spotted in the Lake
Champlain Canal, just two locks away from the southern end of the
lake.
