For Vt. Delegation, Little Political Risk In Defending F-35 Program

Vermont’s Congressional delegation has long called for the Pentagon to cut its budget. But Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Congressman Peter Welch all support basing F-35s in Burlington because, they say, it might sustain hundreds of jobs. And despite growing local opposition, the delegation says it’s committed to the program.

Most Vermont municipalities participate in a statewide retirement program that’s nearly fully funded. That’s much better than retirement funds are doing for many cities and towns around the country, which have found that they’re living beyond their means.

Citing environmental concerns, cities in Chittenden County are already deciding whether they want to support the Air Force’s proposed plan to bring F-35 jets to Burlington International Airport. Their decisions could change the Pentagon’s preferred location for the new jets.
