Many New England states declared a state of
emergency this weekend following the major coastal storm that dumped more than
two feet of snow in parts of the region, including southern Vermont. Road crews and state officials
saw it as just another winter day.

Communications reluctantly agreed to a two-month delay in completing its
takeover of Verizon’s northern New
England landlines after a
consultant funded by regulators expressed concern about FairPoint’s readiness
to assume full control.
New Hampshire regulators have approved the sale of Verizon’s landline phone and
Internet service in northern New
England to North
Carolina-based FairPoint Communications. The regulators say they believe
FairPoint has shown that the proposed deal is for the public good.
