Election
officials in Rutland say it’s been a fairly quiet day at the polls. Hurley Cavacas has been monitoring voting at Rutland’s Legion Post – one of four polling places in the
city.
Two
years ago City officials in Rutland
were trying to sort out embarrassing accounting problems and the mayor’s race
was wide open with six candidates. This
year’s race is noticeably quieter with just two men vying for the city’s top
job. But
as VPR’s Nina Keck reports, the stakes remain high.
Rutland voters
have 45 days to ask the Board of Aldermen to call for a public vote on a new
ordinance that will place most of the city off-limits to sex offenders.
Rutland City is trying to clean up from flood damage in last
week’s storms. The sudden downpours caused city
sewer lines to back up and overflow into businesses and homes.
Plans are being drawn up for two different memorials to Vermonters killed in
the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
And,
as VPR’s Ross Sneyd reports, the public has been asked to help plan one of the
monuments.
In Rutland, tomorrow
marks the anniversary of a day many people would rather forget.
One year ago, a ferocious wind storm blew through the
city, felling about 2,000 trees with winds of more than 60 miles per hour.
The mayor of Rutland says he will send out snow plows after hours if the
conditions warrant it after city officials questioned his plan to cut back on
overtime plowing.
