Camille Saint-Saens’ Third ("Organ") Symphony was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society, and its first performance happened in London on May 19th, 1886. The premiere was conducted by Saint-Saens himself. On the anniversary of the Symphony’s debut, this morning the Berlin Philharmonic is led by James Levine and features Simon Preston playing the grand instrument at the city’s Jesus-Christus Church.
